Influenza Vaccination

About the Flu

Influenza (the flu) is one of the most common illnesses in Australia that can be prevented by vaccination.

The flu is a contagious viral infection that varies in severity — while some people experience mild symptoms, others can suffer serious complications requiring hospital care. In some cases, it can be life-threatening. Those most at risk include young children, adults over 65, people with existing health conditions, and pregnant women.

Getting vaccinated is a safe and effective way to help protect yourself and those around you. By receiving the flu vaccine, you also help limit the spread to those who are too young or medically unable to receive the vaccine themselves.

Because flu strains change each year, annual vaccination is essential. Medicines R Us offers the 2025 quadrivalent influenza vaccine as part of our flu immunisation service.

Who should get the flu vaccine?

Annual flu vaccination is recommended for everyone aged 6 months and over.

Who qualifies for a free flu vaccine?

Under the National Immunisation Program (NIP), free flu vaccines are available to eligible individuals with a valid Medicare card, including:

  • Adults aged 65 years and older
  • Pregnant women (at any stage of pregnancy)
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Individuals aged 6 months and older with certain chronic medical conditions
  • Children aged between 6 months and under 5 years (Note: this age group is usually vaccinated through GPs, not in pharmacy settings)

Please be aware that NIP vaccines may be limited in supply and may not be available at all our pharmacy locations.

We recommend confirming eligibility and availability with your local Medicines R Us pharmacist prior to booking your appointment.

If you’re not eligible for a free vaccine or if supplies are limited, your pharmacist will help you explore available alternatives.
